WISPA – Broadband Without Boundaries was founded in 2004 to promote the development, advancement, and unification of the WISP industry, with WISP defined as “an Internet service provider that utilizes wireless, fiber optics, or other technologies to distribute broadband or related Internet Protocol-derived services.”
WISPA represents the interests of the evolving WISP ecosystem, which is comprised primarily of small, innovative entrepreneurs who provide fiber and wireless broadband solutions to consumers, businesses, first responders, and community anchor institutions. WISPs deliver critical Internet access to millions of Americans in unserved and underserved rural, suburban, urban, and Tribal areas.
Our mission is to help WISPs usher in the next wave of evolving connectivity solutions through a strong, vibrant, and participatory WISP community. We engage directly in Federal and State-level advocacy with elected officials, participate in shaping regulatory, spectrum, and industry standards policy with regulatory and jurisdictional agencies, host two major annual national conferences and education events (and other regional events), and serve as an educational and best practices resource, for our members as well as our industry. We are a trusted partner for developing sound public policy that encourages investment, development, and deployment of reliable broadband to all Americans, no matter where they live.
Many WISPs got started because a nearby incumbent provider either did not, or could not, extend their network to reach prospective unserved customers, or deemed the costs to extend unjustified. For those who find themselves on the wrong side of that termination point, or in a hard-to-reach area of the country, WISPs rise to the challenge. Roughly 9,000,000 Americans now receive internet service from WISPs who use their entrepreneurial spirit, get-it-done work ethic, and innate agility to deliver the right tool for the right job no matter where it is. See how this WISP serves their community in the WISPA Spotlight.
If you’ve been following the rural broadband space, you’ll know that Bits of Technology Wireless Internet (BTWI) embodies the grit and ingenuity that define the WISP industry. Founded in 2009 out of sheer necessity, BTWI began when founder Nathan Leerhoff built a 110-foot tower just to connect his rural Iowa home to his computer store in Perry. What started as a personal fix quickly drew the attention of neighbors—and soon became a mission. With a commitment to doing things the right way and delivering reliable service where others wouldn’t, BTWI has grown from a single tower into a multi-county network serving rural communities across central Iowa.
