Nortel Networks CTO, John Roese, penned a post on GigaOm about the possibilities of 4G. He point out flatly that “simply improving the capacity of 2G networks will not be enough to create the kind of network experience the hyperconnected world expects.” In other words, the cellcos just want to keep adding on to their current data networks of HSDPA/HSUPA and CDMA 1xEV-DO Rev A. What is needed is a open network that is customer-centric. Wow! While not a novel idea, it is striking that the CTO of Nortel is making it, since Nortel is kind of beholden to the ILEC brethren that own the biggest cellcos.
