About WISPA

WISPA is THE voice of the fixed wireless broadband industry. We represent the entrepreneurs and innovators who deploy fixed wireless technologies to provide fast, affordable broadband internet service in their communities. Our members are small but mighty: local companies that provide their communities with broadband service, oftentimes with their first broadband connection, or effective broadband competition.

WISPA’s approximately 800 members are composed of fixed Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and the industry that supports fixed wireless broadband including equipment suppliers, support services, and other components needed to run a successful business. Our members, and WISPs in general, provide broadband access to over 4 million residential and business customers, often in exclusively rural areas.

Statement of the Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA) for today's Senate hearing on "The Impact of Broadband Investments in Rural America"

Alysha Zang 0 2096 Article rating: 2.0

Washington, DC, March 12, 2019 – Approximately 24 million Americans – many living in rural communities – lack adequate broadband access.  Though hundreds of billions of dollars of private and public investment have flowed into U.S. networks since 2005, this stubborn rural gap remains.  WISPA is pleased that witnesses at today’s hearing, which included WISPA member Justin Forde of Midcontinent Communications based in Sioux Falls, SD, recognize the need for federal subsidies to help bridge this gap, for accurate mapping to determine where subsidies are allocated, and for government agencies to avoid subsidizing broadband overbuilds.  WISPA also appreciates witness statements acknowledging the importance of spectrum for quick and affordable broadband deployment in places where sparsely populated areas do not justify the investment in fiber.

WISPA says U.S. House Net Neutrality Bill Misses the Mark, "Light Touch" Better

Washington, DC, March 6, 2019 - "Today the U.S. House of Representatives introduced a bill to reinstate the FCC’s repealed Title II Net Neutrality regulations.  WISPA is heartened by the fact that Congress has taken a renewed interest in this important matter, but we feel, as we did with the repealed regulations, that they fail to encourage the widespread deployment and adoption of Internet infrastructure, especially in under-served, rural areas of America.

WISPA Files Comments at FCC in 6GHz Proceeding

Many rural Americans rely on unlicensed spectrum for their broadband connection. But that spectrum is becoming noisy and crowded, and with licensed spectrum locked up by larger providers, small fixed wireless broadband providers who want to offer uncapped high-speed service find themselves with limited ability to do so. It is critical for rural broadband that more outdoor-friendly unlicensed spectrum be made available. Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (“WISPA”) is pleased to support the Commission’s efforts to make available 1200 megahertz of spectrum in the 6 GHz band for unlicensed use.
