About WISPA

WISPA is THE voice of the fixed wireless broadband industry. We represent the entrepreneurs and innovators who deploy fixed wireless technologies to provide fast, affordable broadband internet service in their communities. Our members are small but mighty: local companies that provide their communities with broadband service, oftentimes with their first broadband connection, or effective broadband competition.

WISPA’s approximately 800 members are composed of fixed Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) and the industry that supports fixed wireless broadband including equipment suppliers, support services, and other components needed to run a successful business. Our members, and WISPs in general, provide broadband access to over 4 million residential and business customers, often in exclusively rural areas.

Mike Wendy 0 2562 Article rating: No rating

Over the August recess, WISPA organized the WISP ecosystem to tell Congress that the fixed wireless industry demands shared access to the C-band.   Today, WISPA sent a letter voicing that concern (text below), signed by 233 WISP industry companies and individuals, delivering it to the Chairs and Ranking Members of the Senate Commerce Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee, all Members in each of those Committees, and all five FCC Commissioners.

WISPA Urges FCC to Prohibit Anti-Competitive MTE Arrangements and Practices

Mike Wendy 0 867 Article rating: No rating

In a filing made at the FCC today, WISPA noted its support for the Commission’s re-evaluation of its MTE rules, and called for the agency to prohibit such practices as unreasonable revenue sharing, exclusive marketing and exclusive wiring agreements.  WISPA believes these and other discriminatory practices harm competition and far outweigh any purported consumer benefits envisaged by the outdated rules.

WISPA made two related reply comment filings at the FCC today regarding its WISPA/Microsoft/Google-sponsored C-band sharing study, which shows that sharing in the C-band can safely occur, and if it is allowed, more than 80 million Americans could benefit from new broadband offerings in the band as a result.

WISPA Greatly Encouraged by FCC's RDOF and DODC Efforts to Decrease Rural Digital Divide

Mike Wendy 1 1332 Article rating: 5.0

Today, the FCC began to reshape its efforts to get all Americans online with the adoption of its Rural Digital Opportunities Fund NPRM (RDOF) and Digital Opportunity Data Collection Order and 2nd FNPRM (DODC).  Though details still need ironing out, the Commission’s work here will ultimately reduce the rural-urban divide that undermines widespread American prosperity.

WISPA Pleased by FCC Public Notice Inviting Comment on the WISPA/Google/Microsoft C-Band Sharing Study

Mike Wendy 0 1131 Article rating: 3.0

Washington, DC, July 19, 2019 – We are greatly pleased the FCC is inviting comment on the WISPA/Google/Microsoft C-band co-channel sharing study, which we believe confirms that non-harmful shared access by both satellite earth stations and fixed point-to-multipoint (P2MP) wireless services can safely occur in the C-band.

WISPA Statement on Today's House Spectrum Policy Hearing: Good Policy Must Help Entire Ecosystem Thrive, Especially Small Rural Providers

Washington, DC, July 16, 2019 – WISPA is encouraged by today’s House hearing on building comprehensive spectrum policy.  To be sure, wireless services – which are carried via federally-limited spectrum – drive our digital economy and represent an important tool in bridging the digital divide.  For this success story to continue, policymakers have long known that all players in the wireless ecosystem need more spectrum.  Simply put, the Federal government must redouble its efforts to get more useful spectrum into the hands of those who can quickly put it to use.

Washington DC, July 15, 2019 – WISPA, Microsoft and Google have filed a study at the Federal Communications Commission by Virginia Tech Professor Jeff Reed and colleagues that shows that current C-band earth stations are vastly overprotected, and right-sizing those protections can result in gigabit fixed broadband services for more than 80 million Americans, particularly in underserved communities.
